Location: New York/remote

Terms: Full-time, permanent, News Media Guild role

Salary range: $90,000 - $100,000

Guardian US seeks a creative, curious, science-driven writer for our new wellbeing and lifestyle vertical.

In this role, you will bring rigorous reporting and an original voice to our coverage, which will explore the way we live now: from the trillion dollar health and wellness industry to green living, relationships, the future of food, consumption, work, the beauty and anti-aging industry, and much more. We want to offer readers thoughtful, actionable journalism and essays about how to lead healthy, meaningful, joyful lives in our complicated world.

A key goal of the section will be to interrogate and challenge the flood of questionable health and self-care trends and research, and bring skepticism to this beat. We want to meet readers where they are, and appeal to those currently underserved by lifestyle coverage that caters only to perfection-obsessed elite consumers.

We want a writer who is familiar with the beat and can tackle these topics with voice, humor and flair. They will be versatile and able to deliver pieces across the board, from service-oriented articles to short reported pieces with a news peg or medium length features.

The right candidate will be full of ideas, with a strong work ethic and a track record of identifying unique story angles and delivering memorable stories.

There will be excellent candidates who may make great new hires but don't have all the experience or skills listed in this job description. We encourage you to apply nonetheless and tell us why this job would be a great fit for you.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the section editor to execute and deliver the vision for the section
  • Report and write stories every week
  • Experiment with new formats, such as pop-up newsletters, photo essays, social media posts, photo essays, etc

Key skills & experience

  • At least three years' reporting experience, with some experience in science or health and lifestyle journalism
  • Strong writing, research and reporting skills and editorial judgement; curiosity and flair
  • Ability to generate fresh ideas and story angles
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach; a sense of humor; a desire to learn and strong collegiality

How to Apply

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven't thought of. If that's you, we encourage you to apply and tell us about yourself.

All candidates interested in applying should upload a resume and cover letter as one document.
