Headquartered in New York City, Guardian US, is an entirely digital operation that seeks to engage US readers by combining the Guardian's internationalist, online journalism with US voices and expertise.
The Guardian seeks an editor to work on some of our most high-profile special projects, on crucial issues in America today including environment/sustainability, gender issues, health care, and the state of US democracy. In this role you will be a key editor on a small team, working to conceptualize and execute existing and new projects, with the goal of producing forward-thinking, engaging, fresh and visually stunning journalism.
The ideal candidate will have sound editorial judgment, enthusiasm for brainstorming new series or ongoing coverage, and the ability to juggle numerous demands on their time. They will help shape a significant segment of the Guardian’s output in a crucial year.
A given day could involve advising a writer, line-editing a story, giving feedback on a film, working with a graphics designer to hone a visual, researching possible features for a project proposal and updating budget projections to keep spending in check, all the while keeping an eye on the news for breaking and feature ideas. The assistant editor also can produce occasional pieces of journalism themselves.
Curiosity about novel forms of journalism, from comics to infographics, is a plus. We also aim to mix heavy, hard-hitting news and features with lighter stories that delight as much as inform our readers.
The assistant editor will establish relationships with Guardian editors and journalists, with a diverse network of freelancers and with outside organizations, such as not-for-profits and museums, with which the Guardian could collaborate. They will help decide how best to distribute resources across text, data and visuals. And they will consider how to balance the need for urgent news stories with features and long-term investigations.
The role is part of the Guardian’s philanthropy desk, which delivers impactful, editorially independent projects funded by philanthropic grants on a wide range of topics. They have included Outside in America, This Land is Your Land and United States of Plastic - series that have investigated where American cities bus homeless people, revealed the secrets of the Koch brothers, and tracked plastic waste around the globe. A current major project is The Fight to Vote, which explores voter suppression in the US. The projects are award-winning and fully integrated with the rest of the Guardian news operation.

Key skills and experience:
Exceptional writing and editing skills; ability to communicate in the Guardian’s voice
Strong background in editing
Minimum three years experience working in an editorial capacity in a newsroom
Significant digital journalism experience
Expert news and editorial judgement
Proven experience with special projects and series
Excellent communication skills
Ability to deal with stresses associated with tight deadlines
