Scrum Master - 6 month FTC

We have an opportunity for someone to perform the role of Scrum Master of one of the software delivery teams as well as carrying out Programme Management responsibilities across the Programme.

The agile, cross-functional delivery team will consist of members from marketing, data, product, engineering and customer service functions. The role would include facilitation of day to day ceremonies (including stand-up, sprint planning, retrospectives and demos) as well as managing dependencies with stakeholders outside the delivery team and ensuring that the Programme budget is managed effectively.

About the role

Initial set-up and ongoing management of the overall project structure, within which the two teams will work, including:

  • Supporting the recruitment of additional roles (product manager, engineers, consultancy roles); ensuring that contracts are in place and that contractors are working effectively within the team
  • Defining roles and responsibilities among core team members and extended stakeholders
  • Managing the Programme budget (setting up POs, managing invoices, reporting on budget status, ensuring that decisions about budget allocation are being made)
  • Liaising with external software providers where necessary, ensuring that they are inputting as required
  • Using good judgment and skill to develop a Programme management approach that is suitable for planning and managing the effort to achieve the project goals within designated project/team constraints

Performing the role of Scrum Master i.e. Day to day management of the delivery, in an agile environment using a combination of Scrum, Lean/Kanban, XP and other agile methods; activities include:

Defining, driving and measuring value:

  • Working closely with the team and Product Manager to drive regular and timely delivery of value
  • Ensuring priorities are clear within the team(s) and that the teams fully understands the problem they are trying to solve
  • Ensuring team objectives are measurable and that progress against key results is measured frequently
  • Manages trade-off decisions between scope, time, quality and cost in order to successfully deliver on objectives in line with agreed boundaries and expectations

Facilitating best practice agile methods:

  • Ensuring roles and responsibilities, in and outside of the team, are understood
  • Providing facilitation/coaching of agile ceremonies (e.g. sprint/iteration planning sessions, daily stand-ups, retrospectives and review/sponsor meetings, demos) and acting as a proponent of best working practices that have been determined in collaboration with the team.
  • Identifying and managing issues and risks - escalating where necessary
  • Promoting, encouraging and instilling agile principles and practices, and ensuring the team operates in a way consistent with The Guardian’s values
  • Facilitates continuous improvement by encouraging learning and iterating frequently

Communication and stakeholder management

  • Defining communication plans with Product Managers
  • Providing the appropriate level of visibility (internal and external to the team) around delivery plans (e.g. sprint plans) and progress/milestone tracking
  • Ensuring that the team are presenting clear recommendations and decisions to senior sponsors, and that sponsors are providing the right level of direction and input to the team
  • Creating weekly/fortnightly and ad-hoc reports as required


  • Keeping the team honest and holds the team accountable for commitments it makes to itself and others, as well as holding people outside of the team accountable for their commitments and decisions
  • Improving collaboration/communication within and between teams for the purpose of managing plans and coordinating inter-dependencies
  • Supporting knowledge sharing amongst peers, team and department

About you

  • Demonstrable end-to-end Project Management and agile planning/scrum master experience in a software/product development environment
  • An understanding of customer service and retention marketing principles and processes (particularly digital) and technologies
  • Ideally have experience in working within the media industry
  • Understands the value of team commitment and outcome-driven delivery
  • Familiarity of working within a highly matrixed organisation
  • Structured thinking, ability to prioritise and think clearly through relevant questions with multiple variables
  • Ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Proven leadership and people management expertise
  • Good prioritisation and delegation skills
